- 5/12: My wife and I sold our condo at #302 Southporte, 3322 Casseekey Island Road in Jonathan's Landing, Jupiter, Florida to South African golfer Gary Player and his daughter, an interior decorator.
We bought the condo in June 2013. We normally used it from mid-January to mid-March. We did not use it during the period from mid-April 2020 until December 17, 2021 because of Covid-19. We expect to return to the area between the Palm Beach Inlet and the Jupiter Inlet for four weeks during the winter of 2024. We still own a 2-bedroom timeshare at Marriott Ocean Pointe in Palm Beach Shores at the south end of Singer Island. The most eastern point in Florida is at the southeast tip of Singer Island.
We planned to close on May 10, but Gary Player decided to play golf with Donald Trump at his course in Bedminster, NJ. The land where Gary and Donald played that day was owned by my distant cousins Daniel Axtell and his son William from 1726 until 1760. Click on the year 2019 at the top of this page to read more about that property.
We left Jupiter on May 10 and stayed overnight in Summerville, SC where my ancestor Daniel Axtell between 1695 and 1705 helped manage the Newington plantation for the widow of Landgrave Daniel Axtell who was the son of the regicide Daniel Axtell (1620-62). Search "Daniel Axtell" and "Newington Plantation" for more details.
The Bedminster property owned by Daniel and William Axtell was later used by General Henry Knox during the Revolutionary War in 1779 as a military training ground. Stephen Moore, a descendant of Landgrave Daniel Axtell in SC, owned the property on the Hudson River that was leased by the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. It was later sold to the U.S. government and became the West Point Military Academy.
