What is the probability of a golfer with a 19.5 handicap holing out two shots from about 200 yards within 10 days?
I played with such a golfer who scored a hole-in-one on April 16, 2012. On April 25, he holed out from about the same distance for an eagle on a par 5 on the same course. According to an article in the September 2005 issue of Golf Digest, the probability of an average golfer acing a 200-yard hole is 150,000 to 1. The second hole-out occurred on his third round. I initially computed that the odds of my friend's accomplishment to be 4.5 billion to 1 (1/150000)x(5/150000) based on the assumption that he holed out on his 5th attempt at a 200-yard shot after his ace. This seems to be too high, and therefore I think that the 150,000 to 1 probability is too high, and especially so for the second hole out. Another explanation is that he is not an average golfer and his handicap should be substantially lower than 19.5?

Handicap Computations:

Handicap Index = Multiply the Average of the N best Handicap Differentials by .96

Where:
N depends on the lesser of the actual number of rounds played or 20. N=10 with at least 20 rounds played.
Handicap Differential for each round = (adjusted score - Course Rating) x (113/Slope Rating)

Course Handicap = Handicap Index x (Slope Rating/113)
